Basic Stuff Plumbing waste fittings

I understand that there are several choices for sink and bathroom basin waste fittings, can anyone advise me of the benefits relating to 1 1/2, 1 1/4 and McAlpine. Are there other size options, my quess is that its just the bigger the pipe the faster the waste drains. What are the benefits of a ball trap as opposed to a p trap

As Nige F said; 1 1/4 (32mm) basin, 1 1/2 (40mm) bath / shower, plus regs say that if any of these runs is to exceed 2mtrs, then it should go to 50mm.
