Basin waste - type of sealant

Hi guys
I am going to replace the waste in my bathroom basin as it is all scratched and looks awful. What type of sealant do I need to ensure a water tight seal of the waste?

I made the mistake once of using bathroom sealant - looked wonderful at first, then gradually became more and more discoloured.

I thought plumbers mait was the stuff for between basin and pedestal for example. I thought I would need some sort of clear silicone?

plumbers mait is no good round wastes as you said use a clear silicone.
