It doesn't really matter so long as you fit the boards in the opposite direction.

The skirting board will be easier to fix to a series of vertical battens, as would dado.

As noseall says.

Have a look at British Gypsum Site Book. Vertical is normal at 600mm centres with horizontal battens at top and bottom. Use a full sheet of plasterboard between floor and ceiling. If your ceiling is higher then 2.4m you can get longer lengths. Use wedges below the bottom of the board etc.

With foil backed board, I'd seal the joints in the batten frame (or at least avoid large gaps) to prevent vapour getting behind the board. The bottom is more important to seal as it is exposed to room air through gaps below the skirting board. Also, the bottom of the wall is generally colder and more susceptible to condensation.

Thanks all

I ended up fitting the batterns vertical @600 centres with top and bottom batterns
Ill be using full boards as floor to celing is just under 2.4

Wall batten centres should be 450mm or less i.e. 400mm centres.

I would not encourage 600mm centres anywhere. I even refuse to space trusses at 600mm centres.

The risk of impact damage is greater at 600mm c/c hence my advice.

I don't even know why 9.5mm plasterboards were ever invented unless it is so that you can double them up for a 19mm covering. :p
