We have a very large, old copper beech tree in the garden and this year for the first time it is shedding these little things. Are they seeds or flowers. We've never seen them before
Not a good pic but here is a close up the things on the tree. They drop to the ground and there are hundreds of them all over the grass. When husband cuts the grass they get ground up and then they blow about and it is causing him terrible hayfever. In the 16 years we have lived here we have never seen them before.
Thank you merlin. The site explains that beech trees do not produce flowers until they are 30 - 80 years old. That is obviously why we haven't seem them before. Our house was built 34 years ago and before that it was the garden of a very ancient cottage so the tree may date from then.
