We finally got round to removing the wallpaper on one of the walls in our house. Underneath it's a bit of a hotchpotch, not certain what is what. I had hoped to simply sand it all down smooth in a few places that needed it, paint a primer then a couple of layers of top coat but wondering now if it is the right way to go.

I've attached photos. There's a bit that's relatively recent plaster where they've filled in the old fireplace I believe. Elsewhere there seems to be combinations of a thin paint layer, a red thicker older paint (?) layer, and an old plaster layer (yellowy rather than pinky like the newer stuff). That's my guess anyway... I've scraped off where it looked flakey and from there outwards whatever was easier to come off, so have removed the worst on the right hand side and a few other smaller spots. It'd be a bit of a job to continue and do the full wall to that, the rest seems better adhered to.

Any explanation what is what and advice on how to proceed would be really helpful. Thank you!
