Best Carpet & Colour For Stairs Leading To Shared Flats

We need to replace the carpet along the 3 flights of stairs (with stair rods) and along the landings which lead to 6 flats. Obviously this carpet has a lot of foot traffic and is very susceptible to getting dirty.

Which type of carpet and colour would be most suitable for this?

ps. we have decided upon replacing the carpet as opposed to laying any form of vinyl or wood flooring..

As for colour, "mottled tar with **** flecks" is probably the most useful.

Or buy really cheap carpet and discard every year or so.
