I'm looking for something reasonably priced for unblocking a drain. I popped into B&Q and Homebase and they both had a dual purpose drain and chimney rod set, but as the rods have very little bend in them I don't see how I would get them down the first bend in my drain. http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/n...refview=search&ts=1178648710586&isSearch=true

A quick google brings up the following, either any good?

Most blockages are shifted by one or two rods with a flat rubber (plunger) on the end. You just give a couple of pumps (keep well clear !!) and a shock wave goes through the water and starts to move the blockage, the held up water does the rest.

Thanks for the reply guys, any links to such rods and plunger?

If they are straight rods I take it I'll have to find the manhole and do it from that end as from the drain side there was a bend right at the start.

Sounds like you are talking about a gully drain - it has a trap (U bend) in it. The sludge at the bottom usually needs to be scooped out with a small trowel or by hand with rubber gloves. As you said, find the manhole and see where the blockage actually is.
