Blocking up a fireplace with wood?

I've recently removed a gas fire and ugly 80s surround... until we know whether to replace the fire or keep it blocked up I have temporarily covered the opening with a sheet of 9mm ply screwed into a couple of back bricks and stuck a plasterboard on top. Skimmed the edges and painted with emulsion.

I also added a vent to the bottom to prevent damp.

Is this going to be OK as I read another thread in passing which said not to board up with wood...?

Thanks.

As a temporary solution it is fine it may be long term too. If the ply is external quality it should be perfectly OK to leave it like that. The only negative reasons for wood are that unventilated it would be susceptible to rot.
