I am unable to "unscrew" the drain filter. The filter can be rotated clockwise to the "12 O'Clock" position but the manual would appear to need it at the "3 O'Clock" position before it is able to be withdrawn. The furthest that mine can be rotated is to the "10 O'Clock" position before it goes no further. I'm reluctant to force it in case the handle is broken. Is there something further I need to do to finish the rotation so that I can withdraw the filter?

If you have a blockage in the drain pump filter area it is not uncommon for the filter to get jammed.
You can try and jiggle it around to see if you can free it otherwise remove the pump and or sump hose from the rear of the filter and try remove the objects.
