I replaced the pump and motor brushes about 6 months ago and everything has been fine until today when there is a strong electrical burning smell coming from the washer.

It's a relatively lightly used and never abused washer! Any ideas what it could be?

It is 12 years old now... :(

You need to start by visually inspecting everything to see if anything looks burnt inside. Start at where the mains cable enters the machine as it may be the wiring or mains filter. If everything looks OK you next need to observe the motor during spin, with the back panel removed. If there a big sparks flying from the motor you may have a fault in the motor known as "shorted turns".
