On a new build, prior to the plasters doing their work I need to fit the power/light cables etc., is it normal to fit the cables (+ D channel protectors) and the back boxes first? if so what would normally be allowed for plaster depth?

yes it is

depends on plaster depth, i would flush box to wall

45mm deep plaster - wow.

If you've got the flexibility to do it, future denizens will bless you if you use conduit rather than capping, and nice deep boxes.

Thanks, I appreciate the conduit advice. Any idea of what depth to allow for the plastering?

You could try the building forum, or ask the guy who'll be doing your plastering...

It's usually somewhere between 16 -20mm, maybe even more, depending upon unevenness of wall.

Yes, Ban's right. Ask the guy himself!!
