If you're referring to the master drop wire coming in underground or from a telegraph pole into the master socket then this is BT's property and they should rectify any faults. If you only have one incoming line then I'd expect it to be on the orange and white wires, which should go to terminals 2 and 5 respectively.

and if they find out you've been fiddling they will charge you dearly for rectifying any resultant fault.

If you are talking about the ffed coming in,there should be four wires which are orange/white then green/black and the orange /white will need to be on your screw terminals on the main nte, but if you are talking about extension wires there should be 6 wires in total in the cable

As said before, the pairs on the incoming cable are orange/white and green/black. One of the working pair should have about -50 Volts with respect to earth. This is connected to terminal 'B' in the back of an NTE5 socket, with the other wire of the pair on terminal 'A'. Most telephones are not polarity sensitive, but one or two modems are.

Extension sockets are all connected in parallel ie 2-2, 3-3, 5-5.
