Buring to hob plate and work surface

We have a problem with one of our hob rings.

In recent weeks we have noticed that the area of the hob around the ignition appears to have been burnt and yesterday further burning occurred to work surface on which the hob plates sits. No damage has been caused to the hob and it appears to have come from underneath.

Any ideas? I hasten to add that we have stopped using the ring

get a RGI in, make sure (s)he is competent with cookers, or get the makers or their agent.
