my dad whose 78 has had problems with his old microbore system and over the past 12 months has spent a fortune on repairs to it. the problems started with a lack of proper heat to the radiators and various plumbers have 'fixed' the fault then given up--the cicuit cintrol board has been replaced, also the control valves and the pump, finally he has lost heat and water completely. the boiler is old but has always been serviced and appears fine--it is a classic standard? --all work has been done by proffessional plumbers who eventually walk away. he's so fed up with it all that he is looking into replacing the whole system--can anyone offer any possibile further ideas--i appreciate that you cannot see the set up etc but any ideas might help, thanks.

What are the symptoms of the problem you're trying to fix?

hi,the symptoms started months ago--the radiators were not getting to their usual temp but the hot water appeared to be getting very hot no problem, eventually the rads were only luke warm and the hot water started getting cooler until it finally is now only tepid. The boiler fires and has been checked and although old is apparantley okay.Everything has been bled numerous times to no avail. It was finally mentioed by one of the plumbers that there may be a non return valve somewhere in the system that may be stuck but only a maybe. We know nothing about these systems thats why qualified guys only have worked on it,but being a motor mech i realise some jobs are just a swine to sort--thanks for interest.

It all depends on the skill of the people who have been called to look at his system.

The general skill level in the industry is rather low so its a lottery how good anyone you call is.

Do you think a power flush would be a good start if you did it Agile?

I always start by correctly diagnosing what the problems are.

Then I give a fixed price quote for repairing the problems. I can only do that because I am confident that I have made the right diagnosis!

A full diagnosis with no uncertainty is impossible by inspection.
Blockages of some sort do sound likely in your system, but one would have to be there to increase the confidence level of a judgement.

These blocked pump valves were causing just about all the bad symptoms in one system. I would challenge anyone to diagnose that from external inspection:

thanks for replies everyone,i'll look into a power flush as suggested--whether the system is past recovery i don't know but one of the pump valves actually snapped when a plumber was trying to move it! so i suspect even with the additive, corrosion could still be the problem--have not had chance to reply earlier but cheers.

It probably needs power flushing but its better that the problem is correctly diagnosed.

The green stuff in the picture is probably meant to look like vines but I think its more likely to be beech hedging!

When you have bled the radiators what colour and condition is the water in. Black, rusty, sludge like treacle??? If your system is old is it a gravity primary system? (pump only pushes water around radiators). If every thing not getting hot then it must be between boiler/manifold H/w cylinder. Is the boiler banging lately when hot?

A powerflush in a very badly corroded system could cause you headaches with leaks afterwards if it is done thoroughly! You need to try to find a pro locally who specialises in flushing. Also microbore systems are not the most successful to flush. Try contacting Sentinel and ask for a sentinel jetflush registered person in your area

A powerflush tends to push the 'spreaders' off the twin entry rad vlvs (if you have them).

DS40 (dare I say it) may work better. (and work better at finding leaks aswell). Finding a plumber nowadays who is willing to use it might be difficult though.

Personally, I swear by it. I am a bit old fashioned for my 32 years though.
