We've currenly got an old gas fire & backboiler in the livingroom fireplace of our 1860s cottage. There is a flexible metal flue up the entire chimney.
We are having the central heating completely ripped out soon and a new combi boiler installed in the utility room extension. So we would like to put a wood burner in the living room fireplace. Can we simply connect a woodburner up to the old gas flexible flue? And does it ever have to be swept?
thanks!

I have a similar situation I was wondering about.

I currently have a gas boiler that has about 6' of galvanized 6" flue that goes into my clay lined chimney (gas water heater also vents into clay liner here.)

I have learned that there are air issues if one would try to run a wood burning stove vent to the same flue as one being used by another appliance.

But if I shut off the gas boiler and switch to wood only:
1) can I use the 6' of galvanized flue
2) can I use the clay flue without a new liner while I have the water heater still venting there
3)what if the water heater was not using it and was for wood only?

someone noted that the nitric acid from the gas exhaust when mixed with the creosote it cause a corrosive that brakes down the binders in cement/mortar and sometimes masonry itself.

If that is a problem for me in this 1.5 story cape cod then can a chimney sweep neutralize nitric acid?

Thx!

Haven`t got a clue - it`s a Brit site here ;)
