You can just take the full inch from the bottom, which would take you just passed the bottom rail then insert an new rail, if you dont want to do that do as above post. ps you will come across metal stapels while cutting but if your not bothered about the saw just keep sawing :LOL: ;)

can they be cut down easier.

It's your choice pine/moulded, you can take an 1" off a pine door no probs top or bottom, but it's best at bottom just incase the cut is not streight.
 
I worked in a door factory for years accepted way cut out bottom rail & glue in a new one.
