During a storm in January some rough casting came off the chimney. The insurance inspector came and took photos and said there was alreays cracks on three sides of the chimney, and the wind has got behind it and took the rough casting off. He says originally caused by wear and tear its not covered. But I just wanted to check if wind or storms can cause cracks in rough cast?

I'm assuming not, but just want to double check

The suggestion is that the wind was the cause of the render falling but not the cause of it becoming detached in the first place.

However, you may like to suggest that render with cracks can and does happily stay on walls for years and years. And in this case, the render would still be on the chimney if the day was calm. Wear and tear is not the cause of the render falling off the wind did that.
