We have an external gable wall approx 60m2 that currently has several coats of paint on it (4 or 5 layers?).
I have tried sandblasting with a very fine sand to get the paint off, but is incredibly time consuming, very messy and is damaging the old brickwork.
The brickwork could be as much as 200 years old and has lime mortar which needs re-pointing.
I have almost decided to render, as I don’t particularly like the look of painted brickwork...
My question is, as the paint is so difficult to get off, is it a suitable substrate to render onto directly?
I have been advised that as a minimum I would need to rough the surface up, but this is a very big, messy job. Is there a mesh system that you would recommend, probably mechanically fixed.
Another suggestion is to use neat PVA before rendering using a spray render system.
