Struggling to see why you would need a scaffold for replacement flashings, easily done on a roof ladder

They explained it's because the chimney is on the side of the house that is flush with the bottom of the gardens of two neighbours. It's a large chimney as four rooms on the grd fl and the 1st floor share it, and right up along the side wall of the house. There is only about a foot between the side wall and the bottoms of both gardens.
Do you still think they don't need scaffolding? Pls note diagram - not sure what it would look like after I submit it, but here goes.

They explained it's because the chimney is on the side of the house that is flush with the bottom of the gardens of two neighbours. It's a large chimney as four rooms on the grd fl and the 1st floor share it, and right up along the side wall of the house. There is only about a foot between the side wall and the bottoms of both gardens.

to be honest sandy,
even though i commented about working off ladders these days people should use scaffolding. i consider myself oldschool and refuse to bow down to the laws of the health and safety executive. i would never consider that anyone who requires scaffolding to do a job at height anything other than a standard tradesman to be honest.
im just a tight bugger and will risk life and limb to save my client a few bob

But that's the honest tradesman and I would prefer to use someone like you anytime because I can rest assured that you're not going to waste my money or cheat me in any way.

lol no sorry! not fishing for work either . on a serious note though scaffolding is the best way and dont think any different please. i have 4 sons and would love to fall off a ladder now and again just to have a few weeks a year in hospital for the peace and quiet, maybe thats why i have no fear.
i hope your work goes well and if your guys are taking pictures to show you any faults make sure the resolution is good cast guttering is great and time has shown that. dont be fobbed off with some cheapo plastic.

Yes, there's going to be scaffolding. The original work was for them to do the 'flashing' around my chimney, and to paint that external wall. They suggested taking off the cast iron guttering simply because it was old (which they neglected to say there was no damage or leaks, and gave me the impression at that time that there were damages), but now admit there are no damages/or leaking, so I said no - not unless they can show me from the photos that the guttering was damaged and in danger of falling off.
I'm in Surrey - how does Essex make a different????

Seriously tho` you`re in the right county for potential rip offs - due to it`s percieved wealth - Sadly for us both , a job with potential gutter repair/ renewal+ chimney flashing and some painting would be just right for me , even down to the scaffolding which my M8 has a stack of . Trained as a plumber- we used to do leadwork + guttering and my late Father was a decorator so I learned a bit of that too . But as the forums show - Sussex is the Dead Centre of England - Nice job , wrong county

I'm just rebuilding a small extension on my Grade II house, and am going to re-use the old cast downpipe and offset. Saves money, saves time buying new stuff, saves trouble getting rid of scrap, most environmentally friendly. Win, win, win, win.
Win x 4 - you can sing that as you paint the insides with bitumastic + 2 coats of colour on the outside of the gutters up a ladder - I`ll hum along and - I got 5/- an hour during the school hols helping dad do that kind of " decorating"

The INSIDE? Do what? I refurbished the soil pipe (outside surface!) with a wire brush and Hammerite while we had it down - and I'll do these ones before they go up as well. They'll be good for another 20-30 years and that'll see me out! It was my job while serving my time to red lead the cast gutters inside and out before they were put up.
