Hi guys got a bit of a head scratcher I have a ceiling fan/light in the bedroom the other night I turned on the light switch and I heard a buzzing sound then bulb blew but it looked like it arced blue, I changed the bulb went to turn it on and nothing not even the fan works! Is it the transformer in the unit or something else, anyone help?

Was the buzzing from the switch, or the light?

Where did you see a flash - the switch, or the light?

Does it have a transformer?

Have you checked the connections at the light and at the switch?

Do you have a multimeter?

Do all the other lights on that circuit still work fine?

The buzzing came from the fan
The flash came from the light
Only checked the switch visually not with a multimeter
Am sure it does when I fitted it a white box had to be wired between the old supply and the fan
Yeah I've got a multimeter
All lights work fine on the circuit

Sorry for the reply didn't want to write a war and peace reply

It won't be the supply

It will be the fitting

Sorry about the reply, but I don't want to write Tolstoy Vol 2

Fan in the bedroom hey? Well, each to his own..

My guess is that the bulb in the combo fan/light has blown and its taken out the fuse in the supply.

Your job will be to find that fuse.

I may be completely wrong (I often am).

See if you can find an FCU somewhere and check the fuse. Or buy a multimeter and learn how to use it, or get a man in.
A good place to look is http://www.electricsaferegister.co.uk/Default.aspx

(other registers are available ;) )

Checked all fuses and they are fine so am guessing its the fitting that's gone

Do you know how to use it?

If so, its simple.

Set the multimeter to the AC voltage range. The range will depend on your meter.

Turn on the light
Put the probes onto the input terminals of the light. If you get voltage there and the light does not work then its the fitting.

If you don't get voltage there its something else.

Read the WIKI section on safe isolation procedures please.
