Hi All,

Hopefully an easy one but I can't find anything obvious online.

I am trying to replace a 'fancy' ceiling light with a standard pendant however the fitting only has one cable going to it.

From what I can work out this means the loop is connected at the switch rather than the light fitting.

What I can't quite get my head around is whether this means the wiring to the pendant should still be:

Live - Loop
Neutral - Line

As there are no other wires going to the loop in the pendant fitting, I'm not sure whether this changes things and whether the live should go to the Neutral instead?

I should note, the current light fitting has terminals for the wiring so I can't just swap like for like unfortunately.

Thanks

Or there might be a junction box above the ceiling.

What did you find in the switch box?

I don't understand what that means. Post a pic please.

The minimum number of wires your lamp requires is two, plus earth.

Surely that's what you've got?

That's all you need.

Ok.

Live - Loop
Neutral - Line
L - Switched Line
N - Neutral.

More nonsense.

Why not? What did you expect it to have.

If you only have one cable, containing red or brown, black or blue and an earth. Oh and I assume the existing light works:)
Then red or brown to 'L', black or blue to 'N' and an earth to earth.

Yuo will have loop at the switch or in a junction box.

Great, thanks that's

Brill, thank you

Sorry I meant one cable (with three 'wires'), I was expecting a loop in as well as a switch in.

Didn't realise you could loop through the switch rather than the light.

Not sure the purpose of this response but really not helpful, particularly the 'more nonsense' comment
Unfortunately, some people forget that DIYers - like yourself- don’t know everything. Belittling your lack of knowledge is not only unhelpful, it’s downright rude.

Hope you have enough information to connect up now?

There are some folk who believe he still lives and roams these boards under a new name and that if you keep your ears peeled you can occasionly hear one of his favorite gripes comming from a distant corner, as for me? I'm not sure I want to beleieve in such ghosts, but even I have heard the odd percular turn of phrase in a deserted thread.
