Bought a celing fan yesterday for the lads bedroom and its quite a heavy one (5Kg). In the instructions it recommends to check the celing joists can take the weight of the unit.......My property is a typical 60's 3 bed semi with the upstairs walls being paramount board, egg board or two sheets of plasterboard with a cardboard honeycomb in the middle (heard it called various names). Therefore the roof is supported entirely by the roof trusses across the depth of the building. as far as I recall without getting into the attic the joist parts of the truss are 4x2.
What do you guys think of the joist safely supporting the fan ?

Obviously If there is an element of doubt i will strengthen the joist at that point, what would be the best way to do this ?

4"x 2" in good condition will deal with 5kg of weight, after all they are holding your ceiling up.
The problem fitting the fan, is it is highly likely that the location of fan and joist are not going top be ideal. I would suggest that additional timbers are put in place across the joists space, to help a securely fit all fixing points of fan.
