Offerd to help my brother remove a radiator tonight as he is having a wall knocked out.We started by turning off water and draining system.
We then removed rad and capped pipes, job done we thought.
Problem we have is,after refilling system only rads upstairs are getting warm, downstairs are stone cold.
He has a Concord boiler, approx 20 years old, with an immersion heater in airing cupboard and storage tank in loft.
After refilling system we turned on all taps to free air and water is piping hot.We then bled all rads untill water running clear but when heating turned on only rads upstairs got hot..
Will the heat eventually filter down stairs or should we do something else???

Turn off all upstairs rads and just have the downstairs ones on to force heat through.. It is an airlock in the pipes as opposed to air in rads, you may have to do it one rad at a time

Do you mean you opened all the radiator valves? If so you'll need to re-balance the system. Water will take the path of least resistance so most will be rushing through the rad closest to the pump.

As a rough starting point - start with the upstairs rads closest to the pump, close the locksheild valve and then open half turn - work your way around the rest of the rads opening the locksheild valve a little more as you get further from the pump, until the rads furthest away (downstairs) have the valves fully open. Then wander around the house checking radiator and room temperature - if downstairs is still not not enough turn the upstairs ones down a little more (to force more water to go the downstairs route). You can then tweak further if you feel certain rooms/rads are to hot.

EDIT: To slow ;)

Had one like this recently where a rad was fitted in series on a one pipe system.
I capped it off and guess what heating didnt work
On further investigation i worked out it was 1 pipe and had been added on and the old house owner probably was told not to turn it off :(
Looped it back in and hey presto :)
