Change flatroof to pitched roof

I have a double story extension on the side of my house, which has a flat felt roof fitted. This roof will need replacing soon, and I am considering having it changed to a pitched roof to be more in keeping with the house. The roof in question is at the gable end of the main roof, so the existing roof line would be able to be continued on to create the new roof extension.

Do I need planning permission? Is this an expensive process?

Best to get a drawing by architect and they maybe be able to advise you a estimated quote in your area.
