Changing light switch plate

I want to change a light switch plate from the usual white plastic one to a metallic one.
I have read that the circuit earth cable should be connected direct to the metallic light plate instead of the switch box which is in the wall cavity.
Is this right?

Then, another earth coloured wire need to link the metallic lightswitch plate to the switch box.
Is this wire a special type of earth wire or can it be any one of them as long as it's labelled correctly as the earth wire?

That's about the size of it, use the same material and size earth wire as that which is installed.
