Changing light switches

Is it possible for a total newby to change the light switches? At the moment they are plain grey (should be white) light switches, I want to change them to stainless steel. Is it a matter of turning off the mains, removing switches, and replacing?

It is worthwhile checking first if your lighting circuit has an earth behind each switch.

That would mean taking off wall and looking behind? is the earth a red colour?

No, it is green and yellow stripe.
If you had connected red to the earth terminal you would liven up the case and give yourself a shock.

OK bedroom switch is single switch, red and black attached to switch, and a green and yellow wire attached to screw in wall behind socket.
