changing old type light switch to new type

how do i change an old single light switch which does 2 lights to a new switch the old one has 3 wires in a line black in the centre and a red at each end the new switch has a common at one end and a 1way and 2 way at the other which wire go to which

1) Does the old one not have any labelling of the terminals?

2) Why don't you use your multimeter to work out which terminal is which?
 
Is the old switch 2-way? I.e. is there another switch nearby that also operates the 2 lights. If it's 1 way, there's only a red and black. If it's 2 way, there'd usually be red, blue and yellow. So I'm not sure why there'd be a black and 2 reds.

Thinking about it, are the lights on the wall or in the ceiling? unscrew the light fittings and see how the switch is looped
