Children's room wall storage and wardrobe unit

Hi I want to construct the above type thing to cover the whole wall of my sons' bedroom, what would be the best material MDF, ply or what?
I have the idea of having two wardrobes, one either end and between them a series of shelves with partitions across the wall to store toys books etc.

18mm mdf offers easy assembly and good decorating surface.[and its cheaper] Design it well and you can get it all cut to size when purchased making assembly quicker and less messy.
