As we can`t find the correct shade bed for my 7(and a half) year old,
we are getting a plain, unpainted one, what type of paint would be best for this
I`m assuming the manufactures spray the wood

I'd use a good quality water based eggshell with appropriate undercoat and crucially leave it as long as possible to cure once the top coat has dried. If the child uses the bed within a week of its being painted he is likely to prevent it toughening up properly.

If you want to ensure that the residual varnish will not affect adhesion of the eggshell and u/c, give it a coat of Zinsser primer-sealant first.
