we have found an old chimney breast behind some old pieces of chip board that had blown, looks as if they got rid of the old chimney and fireplaces and just boarded up with chip board, and i think it has got wet at some time, we have had the outside wall re rendered, it takes the full force of wind and rain from the north ,so it could be old wet problems we can see, but how do we go about covering it up again? would it be better to brick it up or leave the caverty,it is full height of the room, but only a brick thickness ,it is a pre1900 cottage, would it need a vent putting in ? any one any idea's please,
ps there is no chimney in place on the roof now

hi nippjune welcome to the forum!
you should brick up the fire opening and fit a ventilator, as the vent is on a gable and the chimneyhead has been removed there should also be a vent fitted higher up to maintain an airflow in the redundant vent.
