how do i find out whether ive got ring main circuit or a radial circuit?

Fuse and cable size for a starter, also in a ring circuit there should be 2 x 2.5mm² twin and earth cables behind most sockets.

All sockets not most.

But this is no guarantee of a ring.

There are other checks you can do but that depends on how confident and knowledgeable you are and I guess by the question that you may not be.

Aye, I think I tried to oversimplify things!! Need to know cable size and protective device rating too.

Unfortunately, I have seen countless radials in 2,5 with 30/32A devices backing them up...

I know where you are coming from, so the best advice is probably to get an electrician to check it out unless the OP can do continuity checks.
