Can you just change the battery or does it have to be reprogramed. The handbook is useless. Thanks The spare key works ok

Reolace the battery within 1 minute of removing the old one. Better still go to the main dealer parts department, ask for a battery and the chances are they will replace it gratis.

doesn't matter how long you leave it, the battery is only used for the remote central locking. The immobiliser part is energised by induction when you put the key in the ignition.

The 1 minute battery out time sounds reasonable to me.
Vauxhall allow 3 minutes with the battery out,but the french are always in a hurry :D
Seriously,if the battery on a vauxhall is out for longer than 3 minutes, the central remote locking will not work. You have to re-synchronise the key by switching on the ignition and pressing the lock/unlock buttons within 30 seconds. The Renault probably has a similar arrangement.

Well, my clio fob was fine after repacing the flat battery 6 months afterwards. can't say for other cars though.
