Need to replace the syphon. Any recommendations on fitting the new syphone unit... pipe freezing or draining down? Or hire a plumber?

Fed up with tipping buckets of water down the loo ...

TIA

buy a new black rubber "doughnut" to replace the old one between the cistern and pan. Buy a new syphon.

just turn off the cold water at the main stop tap in the house or alternatively at the one in the pavement outside, at the property boundary. Then turn off the supply from the cold water cistern in the loft (if you have one).Open all cold taps in the house, and depress the ball valve to check the water is off.

disconnect the cold water pipe and the overflow pipe from the cistern. remove wing nuts under cistern, remove screws holding cistern to wall.
Lift cistern from pan and pour water contents into pan, replace syphon, renew doughnut, refit cistern.

But why go through all the aggro, call out your local plumber and offer him £45 ish and get the job done for you.

Prefer to have a pro do it ... would that be £45 -ish with or without parts? (not that the parts are expensive)....

Called a recommended local guy who says £50.00 so have accepted ...
Thanks for the pointers and tips

Why bother asking if you prefer to have a pro do it ! rhetorical !

cos its easier to reduce the contents of the back pocket than to put up with the missus whinning about the ceiling being on the floor

At least the guy knows he's getting value for money and getting out of a ball ache job
