the best way is actually to get your own cat. They are territorial and will keep other cats out of your garden, they are also houseproud and will not leave thir droppings about in their own territrory, they will try to bury them in loose earth, and you can train your own cat by keeping a small patch dug over for it.

A garden with no "owner" cat is seen as waste ground which all the others can leave dirty.

I do know that being nasty to the cats does'nt work.

My ex-neighbours cat would wait for me to open the curtains before taking a dump, little b****** used to smile at me.

So when new neighbours arrived with 4 of the things I was nice to the cats. I think they then treat the garden as part of their territory and dump somewhere else.
