I have purchased a new house and noticed the cooker electrical point is to close to the sink for my liking and would like to move the cooker onto the otherside of the door, maybe 2-3meters away.

Having never owned an electric cooker before im going to ask a stupid question now, but does the power cable come supplied with the cooker and does it simply go inside the one side of the cooker socket? if the cable is not long enough is there anyway of extending this, my concern is that there is a set distance for how far away the cooker can be from the socket?

I assume the attached standard plug socket can be used for any other appliance or does it have a special purpose ?

1) it is very important to identify the load of the cooker (Watts or Amps).
2) Based on 1 see if the cable is the correct size, it might be that the cooker's load is too much for a standard ring circuit (assuming 2.5mm2 T&E).
3) The manufacturer should indicate in the instructions how to connect the cooker, some will come with a cable some will not.
4) If the cooker's consumption is above 3kW, I would use 6mm2 cable, a cooker control unit and a suitable connection box.

BTW work in the kitchen is notifiable.

it depends what sort of cooking appliance you buy. A freestanding cooker normally has no cable supplied

if you mean the cooker control unit with a switch on it, no. You have to incorporate a cooker cable outlet to connect the cooker's flying cable to the circuit cable from the cooker switch

the cooker outlet sits behind the cooker. The switch controlling the cooker outlet must be within 2 metres of the cooker position, but I wouldnt go putting it opposite doorways or anything

it can be used for anything. It is a standard 13 amp socket, as you'd find behind the telly and behind your computer. These types of control units are becomg less common, due to the implied requirement for RCD protecting all sockets on the ground floor - cookers dont mix with RCDs very well, so it is becoming more common to use plain 45 amp switches instead of the switch/socket combo.
