Now I'm confused :(
Does he mean how close does the cooker control unit have to be or for socket outlets or even a ccu incorporating a socket outlet?

aye andrew, he meant sockets in general, not the isolation switch. ;)

I actually meant the DP isolation switch that controls load and supply, not the CCU.
Ban, you are right there is no regulation i have scoured my books and i could have swore i seen it in the OSG, i have definetely seen a guideline though just cant remember where.

If i remember right it is something like a minimum of 18 inches away from hob, but not sure.

Doesn't it come under switching off for mechanical maintenance, p35 osg?

There is a diagram on page 57 of the Electrician's Guide to the Building Regulations (IEE green book) which shows cooker control switch clearly marked at 300mm away from hob. However, the accompanying text just says:

"Cooker control switches, extractor fan switches, etc should not be mounted so that it is necessary to lean or reach over gas or electric hobs for their operation."

Maybe it was the diagram you recalled?

Are you thinking of the exclusion zones for hobs? Which I've seen somewhere, but can't remember where and don't know if they are regs of any sort, or just guidelines:

For hobs, there is an exclusion zone that extends over the hob and a further 50 mm horizontally in every direction along the work surface, and upwards for 760 mm. In this zone, there may be no combustible materials. This usually means there is almost no margin for positioning the hob to avoid the wall cupboards each side. Note that as of autumn 2004 if you fit a 700mm wide hob (usually 5 burner units) then you must have at least 700mm gap or "bridge" in any wall cupboards.

For cookers the zone is 20 mm side clearance on the lower part of the cooker (oven sides) and then 150 mm each side for the top part of the cooker (above the level of the burners and pan supports). The upper zone extends vertically to either 610 mm above the top of the cooker if it has an eye-level grill, or 760 mm if the highest point is the hob burners.

I guess it would make sense not to have wiring accessories in the exclusion zone.
