I want to create a small orchard out of ½acre of meadow.
The field extends over a regular-sloping, west facing bank.
The slope has been lightly rotovated, and will be stone-picked.
It is now mid-April.
Question:
Have I missed the opportunity this year to plant the trees?
If not, when is the optimum time?

Should I plant the trees before or after I re-sow the meadow-grass seed?

(The property is south of Edinburgh and sits at 800ft ASL - temperature is consistently 4degrees-C lower than Edin).

Any advice welcome.

Hi - I think you're just in time. As long as the trees you buy are not yet in leaf you should be fine (I'm at 1000ft ASL and they're noy out here yet - was in Whitstable Kent at the weekend and fruit trees in flower!).

Will you be staking them?

Good luck.
