I've just fitted a kitchen window, but do not know how to cover the cavity to create the window sill. Can anyone help?
I don't want a wooden window sill I am going to tile it.

I closed all the ones I did with roof slate bedded on 5-1 mix mortar,
that's 5 sand 1 cement. Float over the slate a level layer of mortar about 22mm thick. Let it dry thoroughly then away you go and tile it.

The way to stop cement going off too quick and crazing on a porous wall is to first coat the wall with 5parts uninbond or similar white adhesive and one part water let it dry then coat again with 3parts of the adhesive to 1 water and when tacky start cementing/plastering. Especially with plaster it will slow its setting time.
