Cutting through joists

B

Bodd

Increasinly now customers want wetrooms and low level slimline shower trays.

This generally can mean drilling through the joists.

To the best of my ability I try to avoide this definatly as I like to run a 2"inch waste to as close to the tray as possible.

I have in the past strapped the joist and bridged the joist together.

Whats the rules and have you any tips.

You can of course notch & strengthen joists with reinforcing plates but you need to understand what your doing & how to calculate what size plates you will need to compensate; not sure if you need LABC approval in this case.
