We have moved into a house with timber framed French doors. These appear to have been installed onto a narrow concrete base. There is a narrow gap of about 3/4” between that concrete base and the internal, suspended timber floor. It seems in the past that gap has been filled with mortar, allow damp ingress to the floorboards. That mortar is now crumbling away, leaving the floorboard damp but also holes allowing ingress of slugs and insects into the house.
I expect I will need to replace the damp (and presumably rotting) floorboard and in doing so could close up the gap but I presume I would need some barrier or treatment between the floorboard and the concrete base on which the doors are fixed to prevent any future ingress of damp. What should I use and how should it be fitted/applied?
