Hi, We have just moved into a new house and had an inspection by a damp proof company. They told us that we need a DPC in many walls in the house. It doesn't look too damp in most places, but at some spots it is a bit. We decided we'd do the hacking off our selves to save cash, but now our plasterer (who is a trusted bloke who's done stuff for our family before) says we can save money by just getting the DPC company to come and do the injections and then tell them we are going to hack off the rest of the plaster later.

But he said that all we then need to do is hack off the really bad, blown plaster then coat the whole wall in pvc or something like that and just plaster over. My question is will the this be enough to prevent readings from a damp inspection in the future when we want to sell? or do we need to hack off all the plaster. He says that he's done it loads of times and you don't get any damp reading as the coating seals it. I'm just a little concerned that we will go to sell the house and it may show up as damp still even though we'll have a DPC certificate. Any help really appreciated. Cheers

the guarantee won't be any good if he damp company hasn't done all the necessary work.

Have you identified and removed the cause of the damp? (outside soil level or path too high; blocked cavity; rubble under floor, old dpc bridged by render; leaking pipe, condensation? This will do more good than any injections.

Oh dear!

They would because they want your money, there are many older properties without any dpc and never has any problem.

It may just need more ventilation instead! Was the house empty for a while?

Forget the dpc treatments, it's unworkable, they are the biggest rip off companies.

The damp reader are not reliable. If you're going to seal it then the damp will still be there behind it!

blah, too slow
