Blue = "common"? Take it they mean neutral and switched 230v brn/blk from the thermostats N/O & N/C contacts.......

Yes, Blue is neutral. If you apply 230v to black the valve should close, and if you apply 230v to brown the valve should open.

other way round.. stem up is closed, stem down is open.. on a 2 port valve...

for 3 and 4 port it's a little different.. see the pictures to the right of the wiring..
