I have a stone fire surround, marble back panel and hearth to install on a plastered chimney breast. The surround and hearth are approx 5" wider than the breast so I would like to widen the sides of the chimney breast to the height of the surround.

Question:
The fireplace will be purely decorative so will building regs apply? I.e can I widen the breast with timber noggins with plastered plasterboard on top, or will it need to be non combustible e.g brick work, cement board etc. Cheers

You'll be fine with a stud wall to the sides, just don't bring it round to the front in case the next people decide to make use of it. Build the stud, and plasterboard to come level with the front of the chimney, and then skim across to level it.
