descaling a 20 year old domestic household hot water tank

what is the easiest way to descale a domestic hot water tank without removing it or disconnecting the pipework? The scale accounts for at least half of the tanks present volume . Thanks.

Wouldn't try it, risk of holing the tank very high with any useful chemical. Suppose you could take out the immersion heater and drill it all out... or

Since you ask, best chem would be sulphamic acid.
