tell me something, before you took the dimmer off, you could turn the light on from one switch and off at another?

yes, I could.

I probably should have mentioned this... sorry!

you didn't need to the clue was in the question.

you said I have an L1 and C connector on the back of the dimmer.

bettter take the dimmer switch back and get the right one.

the one you have is one way, the one you want is 2 way (it has 3 terminals on the back, C, L1 , L2)

its a very common mistake, so is not taking a note of my signature.

see you later

ok now got a 2 way switch.

I have coming out of the wall 2 reds and an earth bunched together. And Red, Blue, Yellow, and Earth bunched togther.

On the dimmer I have L1, L2 and a wiggly line with a line through it.

Could anyone give me a clue as to what should go where?

Thansk very much.

probably ~ the two reds cable, one of the reds will be live all the time, and the other will go back to the bulb.
The red, yellow and blue cable will go directly to the other switch. go have a look to make sure. You need to see what colour is going into what terminal on the back of the other switch (L1 L2 C) okay?

Do that and get back to us.

go and check the other switch, then we can tell you whats what.

Stuart.

ok on the other switch the red goes to L1, the blue goes to L2 and the yellow goes to Common.

Does this help?

it does

wire it Exactly the same

that leaves you two reds? (both in same cable, as other red, which was in same cable as yellow and blue, should now be in L1 since it is at the other switch)

put one red in L1 and the other in L2 along with wires that you just connected

sorry about the state of this, done in a bit of a rush.

its as per your wiring. easier to see it.

any probs just ask.
