I'am trying to fit a dimmer switch to a floor standing lamp. I purchased one from Amazon, which plugs into the wall socket, then you plug the appliance into the dimmer switch. It works fine with the table lamp, but not with the floor lamp.

I'am now going to purchase a normal dimmer switch and wire it into the wall socket then run the lamp from that. Would this work?

I have plug in and wall mounted dimmers which will work with low voltage (230v) tungsten bulbs.
However they will not work with extra low voltage (12v) or discharge (CFU etc) or LED bulbs.
What type are you using?

Using normal bulbs. Tried energy saver bulb in the table lamp but oviuosly the bulb just flickers.
