I'm putting a new light up in the hall way upstairs which requires a dimmer switch.

however down stairs in the hall was is just an ordinary light switch, but the light switch down stairs is a double one which turns top and bottom lights on.

Any way of getting around this?

Would a double dimmer switch work? however the bottom light doesn't require a dimmer.

Thanks

Can you put a dimmer switch on any light or does it have to be certain types of lights?

Many of the "low energy" lamps are not suitable for dimming.

Usually the box the lamp come in has the give-away text:
"Not Suitable for Dimming"

Some other types (eg extra low voltage lamps with transformers) may need a dimmer that is of a compatible type.
This Varilight guide may be of some help http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/DataSheets/Systems/Dimmer_Selector_June_2011_A.pdf

Dimmable lamps on stairways and landings are not a good idea. One night you may need full lighting without having to find the dimmer switch first.

If you want a dim night light then use a separate lamp with a low wattage lamp and leave the main lighting as it is.

Hint.... dimmed lamps in a smoke filled stairway are no use at all.

varilight sell a switch module that is a direct replacement for 1 of the gangs on a 2 gang dimmer....

So, it will look like a 2 gang dimmer but 1 side is a dimmer and 1 side is simply a switch.....

Sad reality.... if you aren't already out of the house by the time the stairway is so full of smoke that you can barely see the stairs you aren't going to be needing to see the stairs again.

As long as you can control the dimming from both switches there's no reason not to have the light dimmed.
