I've sometimes wondered what the response would be if you went to a showroom declaring that you didn't have a trade in. Would they stick to the screen price or kid you into thinking they were being generous and lower the price by the part ex offer.
If they lower the offer by saying something like, "Well sir, off the record we artificially raise the price so we can reduce it for a part ex." Could you then say, "Well I tell you what, I'll get the wife to buy it at that lower price and you can then knock the 2.5k off when she brings her old banger in."
