Door knob for a rimlock

HawkEye244, good evening.

VICTORIAN MORTICE KNOBS PAIR POLISHED CHROME 51MM (19775) [An example from Screw-Fix]

OK the lock you have chosen is a relatively simple affair, simple surface mount.

The handles are fixed to a square spindle, by grub Screws fitted through the handle at its thin part before the handle touches the lock. The screws are generally inserted on the underside of the handles so they are not visible when the handle is in use.

The idea is that you fix one handle [many types are available] by using the grub screw, some square spindles have rounded recesses bored into the surface of the square spindle.

If you obtain a pre-bored spindle and there is "play" between the handle and the lock, the "Play" can be taken up by the insertion of a suitably dimentioned washer that slips over the square spindle and stops the handle sliding in and out through the lock

There is no direct fixing between the square spindle and the lock? the spindle actuates the lock when the handles are rotated.

Hope at least some of the above makes sense?

Ken.

Ken can you find any for external use ? That pair and many of the others I have found are for internal use. This is going on an outside shed door

Haweky,
I think you are over thinking this, as I feel the suppliers are saying that it is for "Internal Use" is to cover themselves when handles corrode/rust.
Get some iron or brass ones and they will corrode, but your looking at 5 to 10 years and might just be a nice patina.

I would go for something like these iron versions (hoping that not plate steel with paint on):

Search is "Rim Door Knob"

The one shown has screws for the "outer" face to hold the rose to the wood. No screws on the inner knob because it presses against the lock body.

I see from the product drawing that it includes a brass(?) bush to locate against the lock case and reduce scratching and play.

I have something similar. The outside knob has gone dull because the weather has eroded the lacquer and tarnished the brass. I'd suggest using stainless screws throughout for outdoor use. The spindle is (probably) zinc plated, you can spray it with preservative primer and paint to make it last longer, or perhaps use grease. It will eventually rust where the coating is scratched during fitting and movement. If there is a canopy to keep the rain off I have seen them still in working order after 50 years.

Plastic knobs are also available, but look pretty cheap.

I made the mistake of not searching for a rim knob, I didn't know such a thing existed. As it's for a garden shed door which I've recently changed I wasn't too happy about paying more than £10, which would have been in addition to the rim lock. Fortunately builders depot had a plastic rim lock for about £2 I may post a photo of it tomorrow , all done.
