Hello,

I hope this is in the right place. Just a quick query to see if anyone has any experience of building a car port?

I have at my new property a small hardstanding which I am going to extend slightly and put a 5x x 5m car port up. I am having trouble finding information regarding DIY car ports.

What I would like to do is have the carport freestanding and not have any supporting legs in the middle to as to maximise the space availble under the roof.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is 5m too much of a span not to have any supports?

I have found one such carport on ebay but its £1400 for the kit.

I am planning to make this from wood, probably using metposts to secure tot he hardstanding.

Many thanks

Neil

Doable with chunky timbers. Maybe a shallow pitch on the roof with a single chunky tie of 8 or 9x2. You could probably use smaller timbers if you wanted to brace the lot with ply. Diagonal bracing from post to supporting crossbeams necessary too.

Maybe using bigger posts on the 4 corners (6" or more?) Then a 'H' shaped structure on top of this using deep joists. Then fill in the rest of the H using 4x2 onto side walls of 4x4. You will be looking at doubling up 10 or 12" timbers for the main H though. 3 bits of steel and 4 steel uprights would eat this, if you shop around and are prepared to prime/paint/connect the steels yourself then cost should only be a few hundred quid.

If this seems like overkill, just think about what would be on top if we get 12" of snow like we did in the winter.
